Baby It's Cold Outside

#37

It's been unusually cold in my neck of the woods for over a week now.  When I look out my window, all I see is cold.  I don't see the grass or the sky or the birds, just cold. So I started thinking, how can I capture the cold in a picture?  So I put on my boots & coat, threw my camera bag over my shoulder and set off out my back door to capture the cold.  Lucky for me, my neighbors have a lot of junk.  Which includes this rusty old truck.  What do you think?  Can you feel the cold coming through?

Technical Notes:  Nikon D70, Nikkor 55-200, ISO 400, f/5.6, 1/20, Preset applied in Aperture 3 called Hammer Film.  As a side note, I don't really like this lens.  It was cheap and had decent reviews.  But in the end it's soft and I usually end up unhappy with the results.  But today was an exception.  And besides I needed it's range to spy on my neighbors stuff:)

  1. Oooh, nice! I have a real soft spot for rusty old trucks, they have the best stories to tell. The surface would make some great textures if you were in the mind to do so.

  2. While yes, this photo does have a cold, wintry look, IT'S NOT COLD THERE, AMY. It felt like springtime and we're a bit bummed to be back to the snow. Judging by the weather, Aaron won't be working for a couple of days and we should have stayed in Texas!

  3. Tarenaround, Yes it would make some great textures! So tell me how to do that:) Or better yet, I can send you the picture and you can use it to create some textures.

  4. How close can you get to this truck? Can you zoom in on just the paint/rust areas like above the wheel well and fill the screen with nothing but the color? If so, snap off some photos with a large resolution. Then the sky is the limit. Open it up in your editing program and play. Soften it, add some vignetting, switch up the colors. Let your eye lead you. There are no fast and hard rules for textures as far as I can tell and I have 100's and 100's of them saved on my hard drive. That truck seems just too good to pass up on all that potential. Spoken like a true photo nerd. =0)
